3D Modeling

3D models are created using source data. Examples are: CAD drawings, photo materials, etc. The models are optimized for real-time use. Time required and associated cost for each model is influenced by the program of requirements and quality of the source data. Examples are:
  • Max. number of triangles
  • Multi-texture yes/no
  • Normal mapping yes/no
  • Sensor representations (IR and/or NVG)
  • Number of regular LODs (levels of detail)
  • Number of damage LODs
  • Collision mesh (convex, etc)
  • Material properties
  • Navigation mesh
  • Indoor or outdoor only (for buildings)
  • Articulated or rigid (for vehicles)
  • Skinned or segmented (for characters)
  • Output format

Terrain databases

As with 3D models, terrain databases are created using source data. Examples: DTED or DEM for height data, GeoTIFF for satellite overlays and ESRI shape for vector data. Again, time required, and associated cost is influenced by the program of requirements and quality of the source data. Examples are:
  • The dimension of the terrain database
  • The coordinate system and projection to use
  • Detail of areas
  • Geo-specific (representing an actual location on Earth)
  • Geo-typical (having the look-and-feel of a location on Earth)
  • Terrain surface types and parameters
  • The number of seasons required
  • The minimal number of object types to use (i.e. tree types)
  • Infrastructure networks
