VIT: Contemporary training for Dismounted Soldiers

Currently, the Army is using Military Operations on Urban Terrain (MOUT) sites like Oostdorp and Marnehuizen in The Netherlands for live training, and is going to use serious games for desktop training. Problems regarding live training are that the MOUT sites are fully booked, it is costly, logistics are difficult and you cannot easily change the appearance of the MOUT site. Games do not have these problems, but do not offer the immersive experience of live training. re-lion is offering a solution with the Virtual Infantry Trainer (VIT) and is world leader in this technology.

How does the VIT work

With the mobile VIT solution soldiers can train indoors, in warehouses, as well as outdoors with the ability to rapidly change the virtual environment depending on the type of training. Each user can move through the virtual environment with the use of a system which is a combination of an ultra light sensor suit, a computing device, a tracked weapon and a head-mounted display (HMD) allowing completely natural interaction with the 360-degree virtual environment. The whole system has been designed with the Train-as-you-fight methodology in mind.

After Action Review

Instructors can follow each soldier’s movement, posture and actions in real time through the use of an innovative instructor console without disrupting the training. After the exercise, an after action review (AAR), using Lumo After Action Review, can be performed of data recorded during the exercise.

Lumo After Action Review (AAR) is a playback and annotation tool for training sessions. Its purpose is to give a student and/or instructor a better overview of what happened during training by allowing the user camera control and the ability to annotate specific events. Data can be exported from the AAR tool into a video or CSV format for close inspection.

Support

re-lion offers different levels of support for VIT, please contact us for exact details. Examples are:
  • Support off-site via a dedicated helpdesk available during business hours.
  • Support on-site during exercises and mission rehearsals.
  • Delivery of geospecific or geotypical content (models, terrains, etc) within a fixed amount of time.
  • Etc.

Available configurations

All VIT systems are tailored to the requirements of the customer. This is possible as VIT is based on an open and modular architecture. An example of a change in the configuration is simulated weapons with recoil or the use of blueguns based the capability requirement of weapon drill exercises. Another example is the number of participants in each training or the capability to include a classroom desktop trainer in each exercise or the dimensions of the physical area to use. Please contact us for options.

Interoperability

Networking

VIT is interoperable and supports communications via HLA to other simulators depending on the FOM and runtime infrastructure (RTI) used.

3D Models and virtual environments

Lumo Builder is the application used to create virtual environments for VIT. It supports several industry standard file formats to existing models.

Example scenarios

  • Move towards a building
  • Maneuver between buildings
  • Enter/search/clear a building with different levels of violence
  • Taking fire positions in/outside a building
  • IED-awareness
spacer

Key Features

  • Break into/search/clear houses
  • Suitable for fireteams, squad or section size exercises.
  • Offers opposing, neutral and friendly forces.
  • Easy to create 3D content using Lumo Builder
  • Training and mission rehearsal
  • After Action Review
  • Integrates with Classroom trainers (e.g. VBS2, Steel Beasts, etc)

Live training   The Royal Netherlands Army is working together with re-lion to develop a new training system for their soldiers. Currently, the Army is using Military Operations in Urban Terrain (MOUT) sites like Oostdorp and Marnehuizen for live training, and is going to use serious games for desktop training. Problems regarding live training are that the MOUT sites are fully booked, it is costly, logistics are difficult and you cannot easily change the appearance of the MOUT site. The Ministry of Defence is enthralled with this solution. Major Clemens Roos from the Army Education and Training Command: “The Army has to operate under difficult and complex circumstances with relatively little soldiers and equipment. This new training methodology will eventually lead to a better trained soldier in a relative short time period”. TNO is performing an analysis on the performance of the new training system.
