Driving Simulation Systems for Military Training

Lumo Drive is a software solution for driving simulation. The driving simulator software is based on a common simulation runtime. This architecture enables the developer and the user to quickly change the configuration of the simulated vehicle, the environment or the scenarios defining the lessons. The software and hardware is PC based and easy to extend using scripts.

The single display configuration is based on a standard PC, a steering wheel with gearbox and pedals and a set of speakers or headphones. It is often used when left and right views from the car are not needed.

The three display configuration is based on standard PCs, a steering wheel with gearbox and pedals and a set of speakers or headhones. It is a cost-effective way for operating a medium-fidelity driving simulator.

The mockup configuration is based on an actual vehicle that is instrumented and a 180 degree field-of-view projection set. It offers the driver the most realistic experience possible in a fixed-base setup.

Key Features

  • Provides computer automated instruction (CAI) and objective automated assesment methods to relieve instructors from a one-on-one situation if needed and changing the job into from instructing into coaching.
  • Is highly reconfigurable. The images above show the most common configurations: 180-degree projection with mockup, three LCDs or single LCD.
  • The dynamics system in Lumo Drive makes it relatively easy to insert new vehicle models (tracked and/or wheeled) when interaction with the terrain is important.
  • Every action during an exercise is recorded for use in an after-action review (AAR) via Lumo AAR if required. Student data is collected in a central database ready for printout.
  • Provides a realistic driving experience by 1) simulating pedestrians and other drivers with different social models, 2)  driving through different weather types and 3) an advanced vehicle model.
  • Renders at a stable framerate of 60Hz
  • Lessons are built using Lua script and a virtual environment.
  • Virtual environments are created using Lumo Builder
  • Is HLA capable (RPR FOM)
