Better training for The Royal Netherlands Army using re-lion's SUIT simulation technology The Royal Netherlands Army is working together with re-lion to develop a new training system for their soldiers. Currently, the Army is using Military Operations in Urban Terrain (MOUT) sites like Oostdorp and Marnehuizen for live training, and is going to use serious games for desktop training. Problems regarding live training are that the MOUT sites are fully booked, it is costly, logistics are difficult and you cannot easily change the appearance of the MOUT site. Games do not have these problems, but do not offer the immersive experience of live training. re-lion is offering a solution with the SUIT simulator and is world leader in this technology. With the mobile SUIT simulator solution soldiers can train indoors, in warehouses, as well as outdoors with the ability to rapidly change the virtual environment depending on the type of training. Each user can move through the virtual environment with the use of a system which is a combination of an ultra light sensor suit, a computing device, a tracked weapon and a head-mounted display (HMD) allowing completely natural interaction with the virtual environment. The whole system has been designed with the Train-as-you-fight methodology in mind.Instructors can follow each soldier’s movement, posture and actions in real time through the use of an innovative instructor console without disrupting the training. After the exercise, an after action review (AAR) can be performed using data recorded during the exercise. The Ministry of Defence is enthralled with this solution. Major Clemens Roos from the Army Education and Training Command: “The Army has to operate under difficult and complex circumstances with relatively little soldiers and equipment. This new training methodology will eventually lead to a better trained soldier in a relative short time period”. TNO is performing an analysis on the performance of the new training system. |
